When I arrive for pick-up, a lot of the time people don’t know how to use a ratchet strap. The straps themselves are actually really simple. I am sure everybody has seen one of these, there’s really not a whole lot to it.

The ratchet elbow

Go up over whatever load you happen to have. Attach the hook end to one side of the truck and go over the items you have to hold them down during transport. Work the ratchet to where you can actually see where to insert the strap, as you work that motion the hole for the strap lines up. It’s the outside of the elbow, you can pick up any ratchet strap and move the ratchet until you see the elbow and insert the strap there. It’s just like the elbow of your arm.

The Basics

insert strap into elbow of ratchet
Insert the strap into the ratchet elbow

Get the strap started and pull the tail through that elbow, move in to the proper position and start to ratchet the strap in and get it a tight as you can to secure the load. Then tie off the tail before you head down the road to the dump.

Release Lever to loosen and remove strap
To release, pull down on the release lever

To get the strap off pull this lever (release lever) and it releases the strap.

That’s it!
